Notes by Ira Pasternack, April 2002
COGCC Website: http://cogccweb.state.co.us/
- There are currently about 100,707 logs (from 35-40,000 wells) available on the COGCC website.
- Raster logs are not available for most wells drilled prior to when the COGCC began in 1952.
- Evaluating options for compressing image files to help expedite downloading, but none of the options works very well with the images.
- Recommend minimum of 256 MB RAM for manipulating images, 512 MB would be better.
- Recommend saving file to disk when given that option during downloading, then opening fileproblems occur if attempt to open file first then saving it.
- Recommendations for Tiff image viewing software are located at: http://cogccweb.state.co.us/Documents/tiffinfo.htm (including links to Microsoft website where “Imaging for Windows 95” can be downloaded, and other websites where shareware and commercial Tiff image file viewers can be downloaded).
- The scanned logs are in CCITT Group IV compression (TIFF image) format.
- There are two methods for searching for raster logs: searching by API number and searching by using the interactive GIS Online system.
- To conduct searches by API number go to:
http://viis.state.co.us/cgi-bin/searchcl.exe?ID=8586016&CLASSID=30
- Enter only the three digit county code followed by the five digit unique well identifier code. Do not enter the two digit state code (“05”) or put a dash or a space between the county and unique well identifier codes. For example, to search for the well 05-083-06398, enter 08306398 in the API field. Once finished, click on search.
- To conduct searches by location using a GIS interface go to: http://cogccweb.stata.co.us/map
- Searching with the GIS interface will require mapviewing software to be downloaded and installed. The mapviewing software (Autodesk MapGuide® Viewer) is available free of charge; there is a link on the COGGC website. Note that the Viewer software must be installed; without the Viewer software, the GIS interface will appear to be loading for an extended period, but it will not work!)
- Autodesk MapGuide® Viewer is available for Windows, Macintosh and Unix platforms running Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers. Once the Viewer software is downloaded (it is about 2.6 MB), it is very easy to install.
Special Thanks / Additional Help
Rich Griebling (COGCC Director) and Brian Macke (COGCC Deputy Director) are to be commended for their commitments to provide no cost public access to the well data via the Internet.
Thom Kerr (Website Information Manager) and Jim Milne (Website GIS Administrator) were extremely helpful in providing information on how to access data on the COGCC website. Laura Wray and Nicole Koenig of the Colorado Geological Survey also significantly contributed to the understanding of the website capabilities. Thom and Jim may be contacted for questions regarding data downloading from the website, but NOT how to manipulate the data within any third party software once it has been downloaded.
